Why I love speaking to aspiring changemakers and leaders …
My political career started when I was a 25-year-old temporary clerk delivering papers to the House Minority Leader’s office. Getting ready for the upcoming legislative session, she looked up from her desk and, with a curling iron still in wrapped in her hair, asked, “Have you ever considered running for office?”
The next year, at 26, I ran for office and lost. At 27, I was the youngest State Chair in the Republican Party. At 28, I won my 1st election, unseating a 16-year incumbent. At 31, I was the youngest woman to lead a major political party in a U.S. State Legislature. At 35, I was the first sitting elected official to leave the Republican Party after the 2016 Presidential Election.
My leadership journey was messy and imperfect with sharp turns and sudden falls. I jumped headfirst into politics and learned to lead during a turbulent and defining moment for the Republican Party. My experiences taught me, very publicly, to be resilient in a storm, to rest in uncertainty, and to adapt constantly.
Most importantly, I learned that leaders need to be brave not perfect. Now, I feel most fulfilled when I can help others do that well.
